Michigan University says: The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God (‘God is a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere’ (Hermes Trismegistus)).
Don’t let me lead your focus singularly towards the circles, because the conversation is far deeper in my mind equaling the process of “Evaluation of Spirit Self.”
I said in the application: The mechanics of vessel (i.e. object of focus or in this case the hubcap) also extends into the mechanics of the circle, tying it to other spheres: sociology, metaphysics, gravitation, electromagnetism, mathematics, religion, tradition, culture, music, spiritualism and more. This makes this project sustainably inexhaustible for research, applications, and most of all art production. Through the work produced I visually equate all parts of this proposal.
This is the culmination of my thoughts, research, process, meditations, intuition and ideas towards this project time.
The work developed past the Hubcap into form, mark, space, shape and color. Propelled by readings of Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, David Smith, Cornelia Parker, De Kooning, Paul Emile Borduas, Fraud, Gram, Harman, Hicks, Don Juan, God, Buddha and a few others.
Please Note: I create this description for the purpose of educational fulfillment and in no way would ever choose to limit or persuade the viewer from their own perspective.
The final sculpture shown above is a culmination of what could be an endless look at the human spirit and how it connects, evolves and grows. My own included.
“We are all inventors
and our life is the pallet in which experience writes the script
to opportunity to self-fulfillment.”
“There is nothing rigid or stationary.”
In this piece I have intentionally chosen recycled material and the application of size.
Circle; wagon, carriage and implement wheels from the early teens, made of Wrought Iron which carry’s electromagnetic fields and properties of plasticity, malleable form and strength, molecularity true an elementary reaction equal to the sum. The Wrought iron is obtained by puddling pig iron while molten in which the physical action of creating matter is one metaphor applied here. Wrought Iron is nearly pure as is the intention in this piece.
The wheels or circles carry all the principals of shape: history, motion, infinite, American passion for travel: physical, mental, astral, emotional, immersion.
The shape also shares the possibility of action without change. Starting and ending in the same place.
The shafts left on the wheel offers the equation of out and in, choice, enter or exit, a ramp on or off the highway of metaphysical experience in circle or loop of life.
The Calipers: some have been opened and some are closed again intentional, to speak to the breaks can be on or off, exposing the works internal or external, closing the process down or turning off. Speaking at internal sometimes private, sometimes exposed. The teeth of the process are always there weather exposed or not. Working function regardless of choice.
Center posts: to the wheels some are detailed and some simple for just that reason and reason itself.
The Spokes: speak to evolution and lack thereof. Spirit, growth, lessons, connecting to each other, universe and /or bigger than self. No direct flow, is it meant to be in or out> Choice!
Pipe: rectangle is made of pipe that brewed beer for 20 years to offer clarity beyond reality. Reality is only so to the individual perceiving it. The rectangle is time line of growth and travel from birth to death. Never a straight up or down. On the diagonal the rectangular shape works 2 ways up or down, connecting this world to the outer limits. A roadway or path traveled.
Color: I have chosen black for its mystical connotations then sanded it off in spots to rust invoking addition to its literal or primary meaning. Rust to me speaks volumes of time history honesty, raw materiality and includes many colors that you have to purposefully look for.
The small square at the top is the bust past all limits of sociology or expectations including personal, historical. As the circle passes through the small square not only is the space unknown but infinite so the circle with no spokes clings to the past and yet reaches towards the next faze moving back to process of enlightenment, growth, regression, emotion, searching.
Small Caps: at the top of the pipe not only function to keep the water out so it can’t freeze and split the pipes weakening the structure or foundation like education to the human, but they are small circles that adjust on screw fittings all symbolic of this conversation.
The last or top circle: open – possible – endless.
This piece was formulated in meditation.
The collection and preparation of parts was very connecting.
